Risk, Risk Management and Insurance: Why Agents Are NOT Risk Managers

Instructor: Chris Boggs

3 General CE Hours / Approved for P&C Licenses

“Risk” is not our enemy. In fact, risk is necessary for a society to survive and prosper. To prepare for the risks inherent in everything we do, we must understand the concept of risk, learn how to measure risk and be prepared to manage it.

“Risk management” and “Insurance” are not synonymous. Risk management is a process combining methods for reducing or avoiding an undesirable event. Insurance is only one tool used in risk management that combines the concepts of risk transfer and risk sharing.

Instructor: Chris Boggs

Contractual risk transfer is a common risk management technique. The purpose is to push the responsibility for any injury or damage down to the party closest to and best able to control the operation or the outcome the person or entity doing the work. Upper tier contractors have the potential to be held vicariously liable for the actions of their subcontractors, so they use contractual risk transfer as one method for mitigating their exposure; that’s just good risk management.

Innovations in Long Term Care Funding with Life Insurance

Instructor: Jerry Rhinehart

3 General CE Hours / Approved for L&H Licenses

Most everyone knows people that have experienced a long-term care dilemma with a family member. Due to a severe physical or mental condition this loved-one now needs advanced care. Can they family render such care at home? Is there a family member that can provide the care needed? Or does the individual (or family) have the financial means to pay someone to provide the care? Maybe the individual needs to be in a care facility outside the home?  If so, other questions now arise: how much will that cost; what is the best facility for them; and, where will the money come from to pay for this care? Tough questions - hard choices, to say the least. This session will explore the three logical choice for the dilemma described above: 1) be RICH and self-insure; 2) be POOR and let the government handle the problem, or, 3) be INSURED and control the options and expenses yourself.
